Margaret Atwood’s writes about women and consumer society

In today’s world, women are forced to occupy a secondary place in a male-dominated, consumer society. The woman is considered as the ‘Other’, and ‘Second Sex.’ She is used as a commodity for the carnal  gratification of male desire. Feminists all over the world are striving to rectify the cultural setbacks, to efface the gender biased power politics so that women get equal rights in society. Besides, women writers, by voicing their opinion and defining their world, have been attempting to create new dimensions of space and new vistas of life for women.

This paper reads one such feminist novel The Edible Woman written by the celebrity Margaret Atwood which speculates the predominant feminist issues such as loss of identity, subordination of woman in the male-dominated, male-chauvinistic society, woman striving to establish an identity of her own , and her being exploited in the consumer society where woman’s body is treated as a toy, as consumable item- a symbolic representation of consumerism and consumer problems prevalent in the modern society.  Atwood depicts the malevolent maelstrom of male hegemony by her profound observation and by delineation of women characters especially, achieves her desire to diffuse her intention as a writer to the suffering mass, to the public and thoughtful people in totality. The novel focuses on the problems at the work spot, gender inequality, pitfalls of patriarchal system and the uncongenial environment needed to be rectified with immediacy. Atwood postulates a contextual discourse to examine woman as colony, her passivity and incapacitated stand against the male aggression in the patriarchal discourse, which by extension also represents the feeble and powerless  status of Canada against devouring domination of America.

ENGLISH STRATEGIES

Hi, dear Psychology Students:

It´s really nice to have  interesting, smart and intelligent students, so as you are.  I´m sure you´ll be reading english very fast. Here there are  strategies I use in my class in order you learn.   I wrote it in spanish.  In class we will speak about them.

Estrategia 1: Ignora las palabras que no son importantes

Cuando lean van a encontrarse con palabras nuevas que no entiendan. Lo primero que tienen que hacer es determinar la importancia de la palabra en la oración. Si ven que la palabra no es importante deduzcan su significado o simplemente ignórenla.  No usen el diccionario cada vez que vean una palabra nueva ya que impide fluidez a la hora de leer. Si es que ven que la palabra es sumamente importante e impide que entiendan el mensaje principal entonces sigan con la estrategia 2. Muchas veces es posible entender el mensaje sin tener que entender cada palabra.

Estrategia 2: usen el contexto para adivinar el significado de la palabra

Supongamos que han detectado una palabra que es importante. Antes de usar el diccionario intenten adivinar su significado. Vean el contexto en la que la palabra es usada. Determinen rápidamente si es un verbo, sustantivo, preposición etc. para hacer más fácil la deducción. Una vez tengan una idea pueden consultar a un diccionario. Verán que esta estrategia hará que las palabras queden mas en sus mentes.

Adivinar el significado es una habilidad que se tiene que practicar y existen muchas situaciones en las que tienen que tener cuidado. Este es el caso de “phrasal verbs” o “idioms” que son palabras que al juntarlas forman un significado muchas veces totalmente diferentes del significado individual de las palabras.

Estrategia 3: Escanear para encontrar información  específica.

“Scanning” es una técnica en la que el lector no intenta absorber toda la información sino que buscar información especifica. Para escanear correctamente uno debe empezar en la parte superiory rápidamente ir línea por línea. Es una buena técnica para buscar respuestas y es muy usado en exámenes donde tenemos actividades de lectura en inglés.

Estrategia 4: “Skimming”.

Es muy parecido al “Scanning” ya que se lee rápidamente. La diferencia consiste en que en “Skimming” uno no está buscando una información específica sino que uno intenta entender y obtener la idea principal del texto sin prestarle atención a los detalles.  “Skimming” es muy usado al hacer investigaciones.

Estrategia 5: “Extensive Reading”

Se utiliza esta estrategia para obtener un entendimiento general e incluye la lectura de textos largos. Es muy común usar esta estrategia para leer novelas, artículos o libros de estudio.

Estrategia 6: “Intensive Reading”

Acá uno presta atención a todos los detalles. Uno está enfocado en entender cada palabra. Es muy común en la lectura para preparar exámenes o para leer contratos o documentos que debamos firmar  o reportes de suma importancia.

Estas son solo las  estrategias y formas de lectura que estamos usando  en la clase.
